ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In the 1960s when Nepal was just opening up to modernity, artists were defining their innate behaviors and ancient cultures through newly introduced art. Art was a medium to search components that would define their individuality. This is a time when the first generation of painters and sculptors of Nepal were trying to mold their opinions blending it with their interpretation of locality that surrounded them. They were in a pursuit to bring their individuality to the fore that would suit the external distinctiveness. And when we look back k; because of their resourceful efforts we can view a unique amalgam of creative instinct and shared visuals which we now know as Modern Art of Nepal. In this context Puran Khadka’s abstract paintings became visible in various art galleries of Kathmandu in the 1980s. The artist has dedicated more than three decades of life to art.

Like the abstract works of Kandinsky, Pollock, Klee or Piet Mondrian, his is neither spontaneous nor calculative; rather they are meditative abstraction full of spiritual regularity to it.

Even though abstract can’t be literally presented or expressed, it can be suggested, with simple approach or complex methods. And both these approaches meet in Puran Khadka’s paintings. “Simplicity can be expressed only when one goes beyond the intellect”, the artist is frequently heard repeating. Mind harbors the intellect and thus according to the artist one has to go beyond the mind and attain a no mind state to express simplicity. And indeed, existence is best understood when it is in its simplest configuration. Puran Khadka’s paintings do not replicate simplicity, rather shows us how simplicity is discovered and is experienced through art of painting.

A man with a simple approach to life; Puran Khadka cannot be frequently missed mentioning that simplicity is the most complex characteristic to comprehend. His take on the later phase of his artistic life, “I stopped trying to understand simplicity, I began to feel it by becoming it.”; him as a person unwilling to keep trace of material reasoning encouraged him as a child to seek something through which he could interpret the speed of everything that was happening around him. He found art. Press Reports/articles

Some of his contemporaries also paint in abstract technique; however, subject wise they paint human figure or landscapes inclining towards the socio-cultural aspect of Nepal. In this context Khadka’s subject itself is abstract, which he aptly entitles ‘The Wholeness’, which also is the title of this exhibition.
